Sir Willard White - one of the greatest bass voices in the world
![]() |
Sir Willard White is one of the world’s greatest basses, known for his enormously rich voice. Born Willard Wentworth White in Jamaica on 10th October 1946, his parents were not musical; however they recognised his talent and gave him huge support. Willard White studied at the Jamaican School of Music and Juilliard in New York, and made his debut with New York City Opera in 1974 as Colline in La Boheme. Sometimes compared to U.S. singer Paul Robeson, Willard’s repertoire includes bass-baritone roles in operas by Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Prokofiev and Gershwin. His ability to also act was especially noted in Porgy and Bess at Glyndebourne in 1986. He then won strong reviews starring in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Othello. White was knighted in 2004 for services to music.
CD's by White include:
- My Way - Willard White
- Mozart - Requiem; Kyrie, K341
- Copland: Old American Songs
- Gershwin: Porgy and Bess
- Tippett: A Child of our Time
